- Article Writing - Bunting
Business Goals:
The Professional Business Writing request for this
composition included several goals. First, the article should
address "bunting" as it relates to the graded 2009 Lincoln
cents. Second, the tone needed to be reverential and
patriotic without being too sappy.Third, the article should
evoke emotion and desire to own the coins.

Bunting – What is it? Why is it important to the new
Lincoln cents?
Like many words in the English language, bunting means
different things. For example, bunting is what baseball players
do to advance runners on base. It is a hooded baby garment made
of a soft cloth, similar to a blanket, which encloses all but
the baby’s face. Also, a bunting can be one of various birds in
the finch family having a short, stout bill. But, perhaps more
important to coins, bunting is a thin cloth or cloth-like
material in patriotic colors draped in a festive way and
commonly seen at patriotic holidays or political
gatherings.
Even then, the decorative bunting occurs as different
types. Frequently, red, white and blue bunting is draped in a
fan or semicircular shape on buildings, porch railings, cars or
stages set up for speeches. Another type, flag bunting, is a
series of flags connected at two corners – stars to stripes –
and when strung across an area such as a street or a room the
flags hang with the stripes flowing down. Next, for tall,
narrow spaces, bunting can be a single flag with the stripes
elongated to accent the vertical space. But, bunting can be
other types as well depending on the imagination.
With the ceremonial releases of the four Lincoln cents
this year, the premier grading company, PCGS, wanted to
emphasize these coins with a new and special label. Their
challenges were twofold. First, how would they particularly
recognize and honor Abraham Lincoln, the President and the man,
along with his place in our history. At the same time, how
could the label allow for the normal content: coin name, type
of coin, year, PCGS mint state grade, ID number and bar code
yet still be easily read.
PCGS met and exceeded their challenges. Behind the
coin’s description are two obviously memorable Lincoln icons.
In the background a faint image of the Lincoln Memorial can be
seen similar to the reverse of the regular Lincoln penny. Also
iconic, a grayscale picture of Lincoln’s face emerges in the
foreground but is still somewhat behind the coin’s description.
Even with the explanatory text on the label, both the Memorial
and Lincoln’s face are easily recognizable and appear almost
three dimensional.
But, the most striking part of the new label is the
colorful bunting across the top. This bunting is different, not
like one of the more frequently seen types described earlier.
Two flags in rich reds and deep blues accented by the white
stars and stripes help make this bunting distinctive. For
another distinction, the flags connect stars to stars with the
stripes pulled back to the top corners. This ceremonial draped
bunting emphasizes the coin’s description and the background
illustrations of the Memorial and Lincoln’s face. In addition
as a showcase for the coin’s uniqueness, PCGS placed the
Lincoln cent in the holder where the unusual reverse would be
accented by their new, exclusive label.
To celebrate the 2009 Lincoln cents, PCGS wanted
something unique, something different, something proud. They
spent over a month with experts and a talented graphics artist
to render this extraordinary label in recognition of the 200th
anniversary of Lincoln’s birth and the 100th anniversary of the
first Lincoln penny.
The resulting label is stunning by itself and
emphasizes the importance of the new coins in remembrance of
Lincoln. Great job, PCGS! People will want these PCGS graded
coins not only for their mint state grade and their uniqueness
in recognizing our 16th president but also for their beautiful
label. As a final note, PCGS plans to use this unique bunting
only for the Lincoln coins.
